These foods and the bacteria in your mouth go hand in hand. The bacteria that builds in your mouth actually feed off of the sugary food you have consumed. Within minutes, the acid starts to coat the teeth. That’s why our dentists in Egan always recommend brushing your teeth after each meal. Most people, when we think of sugar, think of all the sweet foods like cakes and candies. However, there is a lot of food we forget about that contain hidden sugars. So, make sure you are always checking your products to see the sugar content.

Similar to sugar, there are foods you need to be aware of, for their acidity content. Many people think that cola-type products are the culprit, but there are many other products that have high acidity, that you consume every day. Things like fish and bread even contain acid. The way acid breaks down our teeth is a little different than sugary foods. The acid starts breaking down teeth immediately from the acid already within itself.

Dry mouth

When the salvia doesn’t build up like normal in your mouth, this increases the chance for bacteria to be present. Saliva is actually beneficial in the sense that it keeps your mouth hydrated, which prevents the bacteria from growing. If you experience a chronic dry mouth it could be due to a few issues: Genetics, medical conditions, or medications. Our dentists can take a close look to see if this is causing you tooth decay.

Tooth Grinding

Tooth grinding has a distinctive sound. Grinding your teeth is damaging for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is how often it occurs it happens when you are sleeping, most people are unaware they do it. When you grind your teeth, you are grinding away the outer layer of the tooth enamel; doing this can cause tooth decay. The best way to prevent this is to get a night guard, and wear it at night, or when you are most prone to grind your teeth.
