THE GREAT TOOTHBRUSH DEBATE

ELECTRIC VS TRADITIONAL. WHICH IS BETTER?

Hello, dear reader, and welcome back to our blog! At Denmark Dental, we wanted to take some time to answer one of the biggest questions in the world of dentistry, a question that has plagued the minds of patients and dentists alike for the better part of two decades. As you’ve probably guessed by this point, we are talking about the eternal question of which toothbrush is better, electric or traditional? In a world where it seems like technology has, for the most part, only made life better, it can be difficult to determine whether or not it is worth it to trade in a tried and true method for a new device on the market. To help all of our patients be as educated as possible, we are going to use today’s post and the following post to go over which toothbrush option is the best. Continue reading below to learn more.

HOW MUCH TECHNOLOGY DO YOU NEED TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH?

When you get down to it, how much technology really needs to go into a toothbrush? As long as the brush has bristles and there is toothpaste available, shouldn’t that be enough? This question is more difficult to answer than most people realize and, below, we have listed a few of the pros and cons as they relate to electric toothbrushes.

  • Pros: Although it might sound strange, electric toothbrushes have a major advantage in the fact that they are fun to use. While we aren’t saying that people will rush home to brush their teeth because their electric toothbrush just makes it so much more fun than a traditional toothbrush, electric toothbrushes are more engaging than their traditional brethren. This can be beneficial when trying to get children to brush because anytime you can make something fun for a child to do, that can be considered a win. In addition to being fun, electric toothbrushes can be a timesaver and provide a more thorough cleaning, but only if they are used properly. Simply holding an electric toothbrush against the surface of the teeth is not enough to make sure that the appropriate amount of bacteria and plaque is swept away from the teeth.
  • Cons: The biggest con associated with electric toothbrushes is the fact that they are much more expensive than traditional toothbrushes. Once you get into high-quality electric toothbrushes, their prices can quickly reach hundreds of dollars, an investment that many people just aren’t willing to make. Additionally, they can take up a lot of counter space, and be inconvenient for people who must travel. Lastly, some people find the vibrations created by electric toothbrushes uncomfortable, and those people with gum disease, loose teeth, or general tooth sensitive teeth should be wary of investing in an electric toothbrush.
