Tooth Decay And Prevention
There are no shortcuts to a healthy mouth. Our Dentists in Eagan MN, understand the importance of consistent habits to prevent tooth decay in children and adults. The dental profession has many standard practices:
- Brushing for 2 minutes in the morning, and in the evening (2 times per day)
- Flossing at least once a day, preferably prior to brushing your teeth in the evening
- Utilizing Fluoride toothpaste for those with a high risk of decay
- Seeing your dentist for regular cleanings
- Limiting the consumption of simple sugars found in beverages, candies, and everyday foods
DID YOU KNOW! ——- Dental caries (tooth decay) remains the most common chronic disease in both children and adults, even though it is largely preventable
Denmark Dental in Eagan, MN: Our Dentists share the main causes of tooth decayPoor Oral Hygiene Habits
The goal of toothbrushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouth wash is to remove debris from food, beverages, and bacteria off of your teeth. Foods and Beverages provide a source of food for the “bad” bacteria we have in our mouth. The food source used by bacteria in your mouth is sugar. If you can successfully and regularly clean your teeth, removing this food source, you deprive the “bad” bacteria in your mouth from creating cavities in your teeth. Developing thorough, consistent habits is step 1 in preventing tooth decay. Our practice in Eagan, MN assists each patient in creating an individualized plan to prevent cavities. We also take the time to demonstrate techniques to increase the effectiveness of your brushing and flossing.
moreA Special Thank You From Dr. Casper
Brandon Helgeson
Sept 24, 2020, Is a day I will always remember! It is now exactly 50 years after I started my journey in Dentistry at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. For the dental part of my life, there are several other important dates like graduation in December of 1973. I opened my dental practice at Yankee Square in Eagan in December of 1975 and then moved it to the current location in 1989. Through the years I have had the good fortune of having the “best of the best” team members. Barb and Laurinda were with the practice for 38 years each, Sui for 28 dedicated years, along with Candace and Annette for 20 plus years. Of course, there were many others who were greatly appreciated. Our current team continues with our mission of providing compassionate, high-quality dental care for those in our community.
The current team deserves a huge thank you for their effort pulling off the surprise retirement event. Dr. Helgeson worked for me for 7 years before purchasing the practice 3 years ago. He and I have grown close over the years and I will miss our frequent conversations about anything and everything, along with the professional dental consultations we both grew from. Dr. Helgeson, you are a great dentist and will take great care of the patient patients at Denmark Dental. Laurinda, Candace, Amanda, Jenny, Darla, Mary Jo, Jen, Tricia, and Lorraine will all do an amazing job carrying on the tradition at Denmark Dental. I do need to give a special Huge Thank you to Darla who has been my trusted chairside assistant for the past 3 years, who (like Sui) has supported me and our patients in so many ways, like keeping me on track with all the new Covid-19 requirements over the last 4 months. It was also Darla’s idea for the retirement parade, WOW!
morePatient Driven Cosmetic Dentistry
Brandon Helgeson DDS
Cosmetic dentistry has, over the last decade, become increasingly popular. We are asked almost daily by patients how they can whiten their teeth or improve the appearance of their smile. At times solutions can be as simple as whitening and at other times it can include a more comprehensive approach.
Cosmetic dentistry demands that we begin with the end in mind. It demands the utmost attention to detail. It requires excellent communication between the dentist and the patient…and the dentist with the laboratory that completes the fabrication of the restorations. It also demands that the dentist LISTENS to what the patient desires.
Most aspects of dentistry involve a technical approach which the patient is not likely to be interested in. The patient is only concerned with their ability to chew, the amount of discomfort involved and if the procedure is in the front of the mouth, cosmetics quickly places itself on the top of the concern list.
When the concern is a cosmetic one, it is vital that the dentist take a step back and make sure that he/she is on the same page with the patient. Though the dentist may achieve all the dental goals for the case, if the patient isn’t happy, it is still a failure. Below is an example of case where the patient desired a cosmetic change to his upper teeth.
moreFEAR, PHOBIA, ANXIETY AND DENTISTRY
I am certain I don’t need to explain the title of this blog; most of you can identify with the first three words and how they relate to your dental care. I had one patient tell me “I would rather have another child than have you give me the shot.” Other patients are more subtle, and still some are brought to tears. It’s unfortunate that routine dental visits can cause this much stress for individuals. It also leads us to the purpose of this blog: what can we do about it?
First, you should do your best to find a dentist you trust; a dentist that is an advocate for your oral health, and strives to create a positive experience every time you arrive at the office.
Second, be open and honest about what you are feeling and any apprehension you have about your appointment. When I notice apprehensive patients, the first thing I do is reassure them that dental fear is common, and then we discuss how we can best manage their specific concern. The most common cause of dental anxiety typically involves a past appointment where adequate pain control was not achieved. I reassure them that we will make sure the tooth or teeth are adequately numb before we will not continue with the procedure.
moreFLOSSING: WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW (PART 2/2)
Part one of this blog on flossing gave some of the basic reasons to frequently floss your teeth; to prevent decay and maintain healthy gums. This update will take you a little deeper. The most common reason for adult tooth loss is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is when the supporting bone that holds our teeth firmly in place is lost. When enough bone is lost, teeth can become painful, loose, and non-functional. This leads to the only treatment option of extraction. This disease is caused by the bacteria left on your teeth and gums. The bacteria also has access to your bloodstream through inflamed and weakened gum tissue. There is a strong relationship between oral health and the health of the rest of your body (this will be discussed in great detail in a future blog).
Years ago, the Dental community came up with a slogan; ONLY FLOSS THE TEETH YOU WANT TO KEEP! A simple thought that speaks volumes on why to floss. So how do you floss? My recommendation is to have your hygienist demonstrate the technique in your mouth. Basically, you want to think of it as washing a window; you want to scrape the bacterial plaque off the sides of the teeth and out of the contact area. As it pertains to the type of floss, there are two basic types; waxed and unwaxed. Ultimately you need to choose the type of floss that gets through the contact areas of your teeth while providing you the least frustration. Many times unwaxed floss can tear when used in tight contacts or around fillings that have poor contours/rough edges. In these situations, it would be appropriate to utilize waxed floss. Either way, it is important to recognize the benefits of flossing for your teeth, gums, and the rest of your body.
moreWhen Should I Schedule My Child's First Dental Visit?
The answer to that question may be more obvious than you think. The first dental visit should be scheduled after your child’s first tooth appears in their mouth. A baby’s teeth start to come in around 6 months of age and most will have a full set of primary teeth by their 3rd birthday. A nice goal would be to have their first dental visit prior to or around their 1st birthday. One strategy can be to have your child accompany you or a sibling to one of your routine appointments.
The importance of early dental visits should not be overlooked. Here are several advantages to scheduling a dental visit soon after your child’s teeth erupt.
- It is best to have the child’s first dental visit when there are no dental problems. Waiting until the child is in pain to schedule a visit can set the child up for a lifetime of avoiding the dentist.
- Scheduling a dental visit allows you to meet the dentist and establish a dental home for your child. This can make return visits that much easier for your child if they do get a toothache or injure a tooth.
- Parents of the child can get their questions answered and get necessary information to keep their child’s mouth healthy.
- It allows the dentist to do an exam and advise the parents if there are unhealthy habits taking place like baby bottle tooth decay. Baby bottle tooth decay can be caused by putting a child to bed with a bottle filled with sugary liquids such as fruit juices, milk or soda. The effects of such habits can show up early, lead to cavities and discomfort.
- A parent can also get tips on how to best clean their child’s teeth, discuss teething, pacifier use, and when it is advantageous for finger/thumb sucking to stop.

REPLACE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH
When you think about it, you are using your toothbrush at least twice a day, which makes the usage 14 times in 7 days which is 56 times in a month. That is a pretty staggering number. However, we want to be brushing our teeth so we keep them clean and healthy. You should be replacing your toothbrush about every 3 months, or 200 uses, whichever comes first. After this many uses, the bristles on your brush, the most important part about the brush, become frayed and not as efficient. Also, all the food and bacteria is collecting on that brush, and you don’t want to keep putting that in your mouth.

moreThe 10 Biggest Dental Health Myths, PT 1
When it comes to our health, we’re quick to believe what we hear. We put coconut oil on our faces because we read that it can be beneficial for our skin, we avoid using a razor on hair that we don’t want to grow back thicker, and we don’t use the same shampoo for too long so that our hair won’t “get used to it.” We love to believe that these things are true, but in the real world, coconut oil clogs pores, shaved hair doesn’t grow back any thicker, and shampoo will never stop performing for your hair simply because you’ve used it a lot.
We are extremely susceptible to a wide variety of myths that we hear regarding many different things. We believe tall tales about celebrities’ lives, politics, weight loss tips, health, and last but not least, we’re quick to believe myths about our dental health. There are many myths floating around regarding not only visits to the dentist, but also details of your oral health. But what’s the real story? In this blog, we’ll explore some of the most common myths regarding your dental routine and we’ll also set the record straight.

We go to the doctor when we have strange pain, we get suspicious moles checked out, and, as we should, we seek medical attention at the first sign of strep throat or the flu. In addition to our visits to the doctor when we detect a unique symptom, most of us are pretty consistent about getting into the clinic for our annual check-ups and physicals. We are accustomed to seeing our primary physicians because we know that any medical issue must be first discovered, and then addressed before it’s allowed to worsen.

moreThe One Truth About Teeth Whitening You Need To Know
As you age, your teeth will begin to discolor. This discoloration can happen due to acidic food and drink, your oral habits, or simply genetics. It’s common to think that there is something wrong with having off-white teeth, but that’s the natural discoloration process of your teeth. You wouldn’t think so, seeing celebrities, athletes, and politicians glean smiles brighter than the nearest sparkling star. The single most important truth to remember about your teeth is that they will continue to darken as you get older, but you can do something about it.
BRIGHTEN YOUR SMILE WITH TEETH WHITENING
You can brighten your smile multiple shades at a time with cosmetic teeth whitening at your local dentist. You don’t have to live with stained or discolored teeth. You can do something to enhance your smile and improve how you feel about smiling. moreHow To Choose An Eagan Family Dentist
Are you searching for a new dentist? Do you want to find a family dentist that can treat you, your spouse, and your children? It can be tough to find the best local dentist in Eagan. You’re probably not sure which one will accept your insurance, how they will treat your family, or if they will actually care about your family’s oral health. At Denmark Dental in Eagan, we understand your worries. That’s why we strive to make you feel welcome and assured that we’re the perfect dental clinic for you. In this post, we’re going to share five steps you can take to find the dentist that’s right or you and your family.
CHOOSE A DENTIST WITH THESE FIVE ATTRIBUTES
You’re the protector of your family. It’s the reason you’re doing this research. You know your child is sensitive to dental experiences and your spouse may not have time to sit in a dental chair for more than 30 minutes before needing to get back to work. In short, you’re the gatekeeper between your family and your local dentist in Eagan. Here are five attributes to look for when choosing a new dentist:
#1 – Experience
How much experience does your potential dentist actually have? Ask the dental office how long your dentist has been practicing. You want a dentist with years of experience that can apply to your family’s needs.
moreSleeping With A Nightguard? here's How To Adjust
Do you grind your teeth at night? Has your dentist sent you home with a night guard? It can be tough to find sleep when you’ve never had to sleep with a night guard. The object in your mouth can feel cumbersome. You may fear choking while you sleep. For some, it can be a nightmare. However, in this post, your dentist in Eagan wants to share how to adjust easily to your new night guard.
HOW TO ADJUST TO YOUR NEW NIGHT GUARD
If you’re struggling to adjust to your new night guard, we understand. It’s not easy going from sleeping without something in your mouth to now having a guard. Trust us, though, it’s for the best.
When you grind and clench your teeth, it damages your teeth. Once your teeth are damaged there is very little that can be done to repair them. Damaged teeth lead to nerve pain and potential tooth removal to remedy any kind of discomfort. A night guard is a solution to protect your teeth from grinding and clenching.
Nonetheless, here are some common questions with answers those adjusting to a night guard ask:
Question #1 – Will I Be Able To Adjust To The Night Guard?
Answer: It’s important to understand that the night guard is there to help you protect your teeth. You also want to ask why you’re not adjusting to the night guard. Is it because you’re afraid of choking in your sleep? Do you not like having something in your mouth while you fall asleep? Gag reflex act up while you have your night guard in your mouth? Address the reason why you dislike the night guard before you toss it aside.
more5 Dangers of Not Flossing Regularly
At Denmark Dental in Eagan, we understand that you dislike answering the question: “How often do you floss?” In fact, we dislike asking it, but it’s a great way to start the conversation behind why flossing is so important. Want to learn more? Read our “Is Flossing Really That Important” article. In today’s article, we will be sharing the dangers of not flossing regularly.
5 ORAL DANGERS OF NOT FLOSSING
#1. Gum Disease
If you do not floss regularly, you will begin to develop gum disease. Your diet, oral health habits, and lifestyle habits all affect your teeth, gums, and mouth. In fact, only 30 percent of the American public report flossing routinely and 32 percent say they never floss. Another study showed that 64.7 million adults have some form of gum disease. If the numbers don’t worry you, then consider how your oral health directly affects your life.
#2. Halitosis (Bad Breath)
Chronic bad breath can ruin a lot of personal, intimate interactions with those you love. A close conversation or sentimental night out with your partner can be ruined by the fact that your breath smells less-than-desirable. How does Halitosis develop? Bacteria thrive in areas of your mouth that are not maintained. The aroma those bacteria produce is a byproduct of the proteins they break down.
moreThe Top 5 Reasons People Need To See A Dentist
If visiting the dentist every six months makes you feel uneasy, you’re not alone. Thousands of people do not keep their bi-annual appointments with their local Eagan dentist, and it’s not because they don’t want to go. Most people dislike going to the dentist. It’s not uncommon if you don’t like to either. Did you know that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2017 that more than 30 percent of adults between the age of 20 and 44 have untreated dental caries (cavities)? Cavities, if not treated promptly, can ultimately lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. In fact, this article is going to share the top five reasons why people need to see their dentist regularly so that they can avoid expensive dental bills and aggravating oral pain later in life.
TOP FIVE REASONS FOR DENTAL VISITS
#1. Detect Oral Cancer
Your dentist, whether they have the technology or not, can guide you through the process of searching for oral cancer. Early detection is early prevention. It’s not enough to hope that you won’t develop oral cancer. In fact, The American Cancer Society estimated for 2018 that more than 51 thousand people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer.
moreWhy Dental Implants Are Important To Your Oral Health
Your oral health involves everything in your mouth from your teeth to your roots beneath the surface of your gums — and everything in between. How you take care of your teeth, gums, and tongue impact how well your oral health treats you. What’s more, your diet, lifestyle, and medical history can impact your oral health, too.
What happens when your oral health routine isn’t that great? Do you get bad breath? Do your gums start to bleed after you brush your teeth? How you take care of your teeth matters. You need to brush and floss at least once a day, as well as see your dentist at least twice a year for a deep cleaning — but you’ve already been told this.
So what happens when you don’t do as your dentist in Eagan strongly recommends? You will begin to develop plaque and tartar on and around your teeth and gums. This can turn into an infection, which then leads to the inevitable tooth loss.
There are many variables that can contribute to this process, but those are the high-level phases you need to avoid. In fact, in this article, Denmark Dental in Eagan is going to share when dental implants are necessary so that if you do make it to more serious oral health stages, you’re aware of your options.
more5 Common Reasons People Dread The Dentist
You’re not alone in the world if you dislike going to the dentist. If even the thought of the dentist gives you chills, you’re one of the majority. With that being said, the importance of seeing your local dentist in Eagan, MN is paramount to your oral health. Although you may be brushing, flossing, and rinsing every day, there may be other oral issues that you cannot see on the service. In fact, more than 47 percent of adults have some stage of gum disease. Did you know that gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss among adults? This means that even though you may fear or dread the dentist, it’s important you work with your dentist to get your bi-annual checkups and cleanings, at the very least.
COMMON REASONS PEOPLE DREAD GOING TO THE DENTIST
#1. Fear
The dentist can be scary for most, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Communicate with your dentist that you are anxious about the visit. In fact, your local dentist in Eagan, MN will work to make you feel relaxed and comfortable while in their office. Fear is a normal reaction toward the dentist, and you do not have to feel alone in the experience. Simply reach out and let the dental staff at Denmark Dental help you maintain your oral health.
more4 Ways To Fix The Gap In Your Teeth
When you smile, do you see a gap between your teeth? How big is the gap? Can you fit your pinky finger between two teeth, or do you have a small gap that you’d like to close? No matter your reasoning for wanting to fix the gap between your teeth, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans every single year elect for cosmetic dental treatments so that they can enhance their smile. You’re not the only one who wants a beautiful, full smile to flash when smiling or speaking.
A gap in your smile is not a bad thing; however, the gap between your teeth may be cause for concern with your oral health. For some, a gap is natural; it’s how their teeth erupted into their mouth. For others, a gap between teeth is forced as a part of an injury, or it’s the result of decay or a number of oral conditions.
It’s imperative that you discuss with your dentist in Eagan why you have a gap in your teeth, as well as what you can do to correct it. Your dentist will examine your mouth and let you know what they think is best moving forward. If you’re’ curious about your potential options, this article is going to share the causes for tooth gaps and potential gap solutions.

IMPORTANT ORAL HEALTH PRACTICES
As a human, we put a lot of things in our mouth. We drink our favorite beverages, we eat our favorite foods, and, sometimes, we tear things open with our teeth. It’s important that we practice great oral hygiene habits to maintain an above average standard of oral health. Here are seven super important oral hygiene practices you need to commit to:
#1. Brush Before Bed
A common “hack” is to stack new habits onto old habits. For example, if you watch 30 minutes of YouTube or scroll through Facebook before bed, you can stack brushing your teeth before that activity to ensure it happens. For some, brushing their teeth before bed is an afterthought the next morning — or the next week. It’s important you create a routine to keep up with your oral health.

moreDo I Really Need To Floss
As a practicing dentist in Eagan, MN seeing significant improvement in my patient’s oral hygiene habits is the most rewarding part of my job. Good oral hygiene can save individuals thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars over their lifetime. So, what are people doing to get such positive changes?
You must mechanically clean all surfaces of your teeth!
Imagine that we live in a world where toothpaste didn’t exist. Would that be a significant problem? Not necessarily. Throughout the day we collect debris and bacteria on our teeth. When it is not yet hardened to the tooth, we call this build-up plaque. After some time, this plaque hardens and forms calculus on our teeth. Our job is to physically remove the plaque on all surfaces of our teeth. Though toothpaste provides a fresh feeling in our mouth, it is not necessary to remove the debris on your teeth.
A Minnesota Analogy…
During a Minnesota winter, we have ample opportunities to remove snow and ice from our car windshields. Effective snow/ice removal is not much different than good hygiene habits around a tooth. The toothbrush is great from removing plaque on the front and back of the teeth. Floss is great at removing plaque and debris from the sides of our teeth. If we look at how we remove snow/ice from the side windshields of our vehicles, you notice you need to be in good contact with the window to remove the snow or ice. With floss, your goal is to go through your contact and hold the floss against the side of each tooth gently bring it below the gum tissue to remove the debris that has collected throughout the day. Just like scraping your car windshield, you want to adapt the floss to the tooth for effective removal.
more4 Simple Ways To Keep Your Teeth Clean
Everyone loves to flash their brilliant white smile, but stains and discoloration can leave some feeling self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth. Fortunately, keeping your teeth clean is easier than you might think. Here are four simple ways your Eagan dentist recommends to keep your teeth clean.
Be Mindful of What You Eat
They say that you are what you eat, and your teeth certainly reflect that. What you choose to eat and drink can make an impact on the appearance of your smile. For instance, tea, coffee, sports drinks, and alcohol can all stain your teeth. So can tomato sauce, berries, soy sauce, and beets. That’s because these drinks and foods contain chromogens, which are pigmented molecules that can sit on the enamel of your teeth.
While some foods stain your teeth, others can actually help to keep them clean. Foods that are crisp act as natural toothbrushes. For instance, apples and carrots are effective at cleaning teeth, and are healthy choices.
Get a New Toothbrush
Like the oil in your car, the sheets on your bed, or the socks on your feet, you need to change out your toothbrush with regularity. A toothbrush should only be used for two-to-three months before you need to throw it out and get a new one. That’s because old toothbrushes can act as hives for germs and bacteria, and old bristles are less effective at keeping your teeth clean.
more3 Signs It's Time For A Filling
We’ve all heard it time and time again, brush and floss every day, and avoid sugary foods, and you’ll enjoy a beautiful lasting smile. But even the most diligent of brushers may experience some level of decay or infection at some point in their lives. In these moments, you may need a dental filling. This is a very common procedure and is a simple way to enhance your oral health. But how do you know when it’s time for a filling? Join Denmark Dental in Eagan as we outline three signs that it’s time for a filling.
You Have Chronic Toothaches
A toothache is an unpleasant experience, but when it persists it can be debilitating. It’s also one of the most immediate signs that you are in need of a filling. Your toothache might be in response to certain temperatures of food or drinks, or after eating sweet foods. If you experience a sharp pain while chewing, that also a sign that you should schedule an appointment with your dentist in Eagan.
Your Teeth are Wearing
Our teeth naturally wear with age and use. As this happens, you’ll find that the edges of your teeth darken and the biting tips or flat sections begin to dull. This leaves your teeth vulnerable to chipping or damage. If you notice your smile is starting to change for the worse, you’ll need to go get a filling to repair your teeth and restore the chewing and biting surfaces of your teeth.
