VISIT YOUR DENTIST TWICE A YEAR FOR A HEALTHY SMILE

Hello there, and welcome back to our blog! Here at Denmark Dental, we want to make sure that as many Eagan area residents as possible understand the importance of visiting the dentist. While nearly everyone is told growing up that visiting the dentist is important, fewer people are told why visiting the dentist is important. As people age, this results in some choosing to put off dentist visits until something is noticeably wrong with their mouth. As most people know, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure and, in the first of a two part blog series, we are going to go over exactly why it is so important to visit your dentist regularly. We hope that by the end of this short blog series, all of our readers understand the importance of visiting a dentist twice a year. Continue reading below to learn more.

DENTISTS PREVENT ISSUES

For the most part, people tend to take care of their teeth on a daily basis. Between regular brushing and flossing, 80 percent of the issues that could affect a person’s teeth are mitigated, however, even the best oral hygiene regimen can only do so much. In order to make sure that your teeth, gums, and other areas of the mouth are as healthy as possible, it is pivotal that you visit your dentist. Below, we have listed a couple of reasons that visiting your dentist helps to ensure that your mouth is as healthy as possible.

  • Gum Disease: While making sure to brush and floss regularly is a great way to ensure that you do not suffer from some form of gum disease, visiting your dentist is still an essential component of gum disease prevention. Plaque, the leading cause of gum disease, is a tricky substance. While the majority of it is eliminated by brushing, it is nearly impossible for the average person to completely eliminate the plaque in their mouth on a daily basis. As this residual plaque builds, it can and will turn into tartar, a substance that has to be removed by a dentist. By visiting the dentist at least twice a year, you can greatly reduce the chances that you will develop tartar and, as a result, gum disease.
  • Oral Cancer: When you visit your dentist for a general checkup, they will perform an oral cancer screening as part of their routine care. Oral cancer is one of the most dangerous forms of cancer that there is and, unfortunately, it is often difficult for people to know whether or not they are showing signs or symptoms without the health of a professional. While oral cancer is dangerous, if it is caught early it can typically be treated and eliminated before it develops into a more serious condition. If you don’t visit your dentist at least twice a year, you could be suffering from oral cancer without even realizing it.
